Vale and The United Steelworkers announced Tuesday that together with Vale’s employee match, they raised more than $550,000 in a joint fundraising campaign for the United Way Sudbury and Nipissing Districts.

“This donation to the United Way will go a long way in supporting many important programs that support those in need in our community,” Stuart Harshaw, Vice-President of Vale’s Ontario Operations, said in a release. “Our employees’ generosity and continued support for the community is something we are very proud of.”

Vale matches 50 cents to every dollar employees donate to the United Way Sudbury and Nipissing Districts. Employees can contribute via a payroll deduction program or in lump sum payments.

“It never ceases to amaze me every year, USW Local 6500 members dig deep in their pockets to help those in need,” said Rick Bertrand, president of the United Steelworkers Local 6500. “Their kindness, compassion and commitment is truly remarkable.”

Vale and the USW’s joint fundraising effort is the largest contributor to the United Way’s Sudbury and Nipissing Districts’ community campaign. Since it began in 1982, about $17.5 million has been raised by the company and the Steelworkers.

“Greater Sudbury and beyond is a stronger, safer and more inclusive community due to the partnership between Vale and USW,” said Michel Cullen, executive director of United Way.
